1967 Bronco resto/cruiser

My girlfriend wanted a Bronco and decided to just buy one this summer with help from our great friend Mark at beachcitybroncos.com in San Diego. It's a pretty unremarkable 1967 Bronco with a v8 (289), 3 on the floor, stock axles (Dana 30 front), manual everything, drum brakes.

The good news is very minimal rust and the rust that's there is easy to repair (came with new doors and fenders).

The bad news is it has sat for a very long time so it needs a 100% mechanical restore. No brakes (the lines to the master cylinder were completely eaten up), wiring was butchered, needed new wheels and tires, shocks.. everything.

Some pictures to get started for now since I haven't done much. Looking for a 302 and waiting for the Centech harness I ordered 2 months ago.

Getting it home with help from dad. It was a hot, long day towing it into position with my truck and winching it up into the driveway:

After a wash and in it's resting spot for now:

Got the top off and gave it to a member here on SCB, did some tear down. Now that it's in my driveway spot, work on the truck has mostly ceased so I'm very motivated to get this thing running and driving so I can have my spot back to get back to work on the F150 build:

New rims and tires (33x15x12.5" on Procomp wheels):

Short-term plans:
- Got a disc brake conversion for the D30 to install from Wild Horses
- All new brake and fuel lines
- Need to find a 302 and get that running
- Waiting on a wiring harness to arrive
- Power steering
- Shocks and springs

Long-term:
- Overdrive automatic transmission
- EFI
- Air-conditioning
- Hydro-boost brakes

After my last build where I built it from the frame up, I decided this time I'll build the whole Bronco and once everything is done the way we want we'll tear it down and have Beach City Broncos paint it/do remaining body work.

Awesome! I would fix it up mechanically but leave it just like that cosmetically. Survivor Broncos are badass :)

I was going to reseal the 289 or have it rebuilt but found a questionable freeze plug, timing cover seal was hard, found a bunch of junk at the bottom of the oil pan and in the oil pickup screen. So, pulled it out to get it ready for a new motor.

I really wanted to get this thing running and just start enjoying it but it really needs a full mechanical restore. With the engine bay freed up I might as well weld up some cracks in the inner fenders, strip it, paint it black.

I’m also thinking rather than get a new clutch etc, we should probably do the C4 swap…

It's been slow for the Bronco; one of the guys at Beach City Broncos in San Diego has a motor for me that's ready to run but I've been doing some work on my truck that I should be wrapping up in the next week or so. Then I can drive down to San Diego and pick up the motor.

In the meantime I have the dash out so I can install the Centech harness that finally arrived.. stripped the paint and started filling holes. If you've ever had to do any of this kind of work before and haven't seen those butt welding clamps before.. they're a god-send. You can get them at Harbor Freight or Amazon. My air compressor is down (waiting on parts) so I couldn't get the die grinder out to clean up the holes better:

I'm not a body guy, hoping I can get away with sandable primer to fill in the imperfections. Just trying to make it decent enough to enjoy as I build/drive. Once I'm done building this thing THEN we'll take it apart and let BCB go nuts with the body work and paint. Still have to fill in a gauge hole, speaker grill and a couple of switches. Stereo will end up in a center console between the seats.

Finished filling holes in the dash. Need to put some filler on it and sand it down. Then I'll take it to Beachcitybroncos.com and Mark's body guy is going to teach me a bit about paint. Also scored a rebuilt 302/c4/d20 so now I pretty much have all the big-ticket items to get this thing running and driving by summer time.

Got this thing running and driving last month after doing the following:

  • Rebuilt 302/C4/D20
  • Holley 4150 with electric choke and Summit intake manifold
  • Hedman Headers, 2 into 1 exhaust with Magnaflow muffler
  • JB fab twin stick shifter
  • Centech harness
  • Power steering
  • Disc brakes
  • Rebuilt the front D30 kingpins
  • 2.5" lift with new coils/leaves/Bilstein 5100s
  • 33x12.5x15 BFG AT
  • New seats
  • Steering wheel
  • Found out it has a limited slip rear (or something)
  • 23 gallon rear tank
  • All new plumbing (brakes/fuel/etc)
