To me the power point connection itself is a warning. Those circuits are fused for 15 amps max, and it wouldn't surprise me if the vehicle's wiring isn't designed for a sustained 15A draw.

What is the name of the shop quoting you $600 for the carb? I know that there is at least one shop more or less down your way that specializes in off-road racing carbs and if it is they who are quoting you $600 I'd jump on that.

I'd take either Sherman or Walker Pass to get to 395 if starting from Porterville or anywhere further South of there. Sherman being the more "rustic" of those options. Too bad CA168 doesn't go all of the way thru as originally planned.....
